Ok, so there was meant to be more than one photo in that last post, but it takes a long time to load them, and I kept screwing it up, and I’m really tired from walking all over the city today, so you’ll just have to look at one picture of my bedroom and wait for the rest.
I have pitures to post, but not the energy to fuss with it tonight. Give me a couple days.
In other news, tomorrow we’re going to the huge huge market. This is probably where I’ll be getting gifts for people. If you want anything specific, let me know tonight, we’re leaving early in the morning.

Estoy en Ecuador!

By anna.sapak, May 28, 2009 11:26 pm

For those who don’t know, I’m studying in Ecuador for two months this summer. I’m living in Quito with a host family and attending the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, which is a private university and the first liberal arts university in Ecuador. It’s very expensive by Ecuadorian standards, but it’s similar to MSU’s prices.
My family is really great. My host mom, Sandy, is an artist, so the house is full of her paintings (which are bonita!). I have two host sisters, Lauren and Nicole. Lauren is 24 and works really long hours so I don’t see her very often. Nicole is 21 and is studying to be a veterinarian. All of them are pretty fluent in English, Sandy lived in the US for 12 years or so, and the girls were both born there, although they moved back to Quito when they were very little. We have three little dogs, a bunny, and a turtle.
At the university, I’m taking two classes, a spanish class and an Ecuadorian culture class. Both are good, so far I think I’ll learn a lot. Because of the classes I’m taking, there aren’t any Ecuadorians in the classes, but in the Spanish class, there are students from China, Holland, and Russia.
Quito is really beautiful. It’s very high in the mountains, over 9,000 feet, so the weather is in the 60s or low 70s during the days, and around 55 at night. We live “on the skirts of the volcano” like my host mom says and you can see mountains in almost every direction you look. Coming from northwest Michigan, this kind of topography is really amazing. Everyone says that the land has its own energy and that there is magic because this is the middle of the world, and I think I’m starting to believe them. I can’t wait to see more of the city and more of the country. Tomorrow I’m taking a cable car up the mountain so I’ll be able to see all of Quito. We also having trips planned to the jungle, and coast, and another part of the Andes.
I’ll post pictures once I take them (and once I figure out how to do it). In the mean time, I miss everyone, but I’m really excited to be here.
